Bavaria is an internationally recognized business hub. Today about 1200 foreign high-tech companies benefit from the advantages that Business Location Bavaria has to offer. Through the eastward expansion of the EU on May 1, 2004, Bavaria is now right at the center of Europe. For many years Bavaria has enjoyed close relations with its neighbors in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), which include Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Ukraine. On this foundation, a steadily expanding economic exchange has developed, along with close cooperation in many sectors: at universities and non-university research institutes and in continuing education and professional development. In order to focus more intensively on this expertise, the Virtual East-West Excellence Network Bavaria has been launched under the auspices of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. Partners include the Bavarian State Ministry for Sciences, Research and the Arts; the Bavarian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Chambers of Crafts; regional and local governments and universities.
